Be a Rider, Not a Passenger:

Trail Riding Basics

Heading out on your first trail ride at Rancho Baile de la Luna? Here's how to make the most of it — for both you and your horse.

🐴 Be a rider, not a passenger.

This is your experience — and your horse responds best when you participate. That means steering, adjusting pace, and staying aware of your surroundings.

🧭 You’re in charge of direction and speed.

Your horse is willing, but it’s up to you to guide them. Want to slow down or steer clear of something? Ask gently but clearly.

🌵 Stay aware of your surroundings.

Watch where your horse is walking — don't let them wander into cactus, brush, or rocks. If you’re heading toward a low-hanging branch or tree, it’s your job to steer them around it.

🫶 Ask with feel.

Horses respond to light, kind cues. No need to be harsh or abrupt — use softness, and they’ll often give you even more than you ask.

🪢 Feel crooked? Fix it!

If you feel off-balance or like your saddle is sliding, don’t be afraid to adjust yourself. A balanced rider is a safer, more comfortable rider.

Most of all: stay relaxed, stay kind, and stay curious.

Horses mirror us. The more grounded you are, the better the ride will be — for both of you.
