What to Know Before Your First Trail Ride: Tips From The Saddle

So you're about to head out on your very first trail ride. Maybe you’re a little excited… maybe a little nervous. Don’t worry — we’ve got you. Here are a few things that will help you feel more confident in the saddle and help your horse feel more comfortable with you.

1. Horses are intuitive — stay calm and present.

Horses are sensitive to energy. If you’re calm, curious, and relaxed, your horse will mirror that. Breathe, enjoy the scenery, and remember: you’re in good hands (and good hooves).

2. You don’t need to “kick” — use your body, not force.

Horses respond to subtle cues. A gentle squeeze of your calves, a shift in your seat, a light rein. You’re having a conversation — not giving orders.

3. Look where you want to go.

Sounds simple, but it’s true — horses follow your body. Turn your head and shoulders toward where you want to go, and your horse will pick up on that direction.

4. Trust your horse — and yourself.

Your horse knows the trails, and your guide is there to support you. If you’re unsure, ask questions. This isn’t just a ride — it’s a relationship in motion.

5. Dress the part.

Closed-toed shoes (preferably with a small heel), long pants, and sunscreen go a long way. Leave the dangly jewelry and giant hats at home. Comfort and safety over fashion — though you’ll still look pretty fabulous on horseback.

6.You’re not alone — we ride as a team.

Trail riding isn’t about going it alone. We ride together, support each other, and look out for the horses and riders around us. That’s how the magic happens.
